The Simply Amazing M3!

31 07 2007

We take a look at the coolest homebrew device for the Nintendo DS-the M3 DS Simply, and discover some pretty nifty features…

Ok, so I was at my computer one day just messin’ around with Nintendo DS emulators, and then a thought popped into my head.

“You know, it would be TOTALLY FREAKING AWESOME to upload these games to my DS!”

So, you know, once you get a thought like that into your head, it’s hard to get it out. So I went snooping around on the Internet (with a little help from my cuz) looking for that perfect deal, and there it was: like the light at the end of the tunnel-the M3 DS Simply. I couldn’t resist, at a mere $39.95 on Amazon.com, it was only 5 bucks more than any normal DS game! So I waited ever so unpatiently for my golden package to arrive, but as you may (or may not) know getting things to Kenya is no easy process. I had it sent to our mission headquarters in New York, and so a week passed…

And another week passed…

I was beginning to wonder if it would ever come. Then one day not so long ago my Dad gave me a phone call telling me he had received some items he would bring home later that day.

“Hey Dad, one of those wouldn’t happen to be for me would it?”

“Oh yeah, one of these says…M3 DS Simply on it…” My heart stopped. It had finally arrived! Later that day Dad came home on his motorbike bringing the one thing I had been waiting for-my M3 DS Simply. I hurried inside and opened the box, managed to figure out how the operating system worked, and had the thing running within minutes. A simple firmware update fixed a couple issues, and so far it’s running as smooth as liquid butter (bad analogy). Let me give you a brief tour:

Box set
Here’s everything that came with it (minus the DS)
It came with a USB microSD adapter, a plastic case (with rubber innards), and of course the cartridge. The cartridge has a small hole for inserting the microSD (which I had to buy separately, I got a 1GB Sandisk for like $30 at Fry’s)…
The M3 Cart
Now you have to realize I didn’t even think of inserting the microSD in all the way (bad Dustin), so this pic is slightly inaccurate, but considering it’s almost 12:30 AM I think I won’t bother taking it again. However, the microSD really does sit all the way in, as the mechanism is spring-loaded. Pretty nifty! But who cares about how it looks, I was really interested in what it actually did. So I gently slid it in my DS and turned the power on, and lo and behold, it actually works! I was able to run any application I put on there, and it even had a media player! SWEET! NOW I COULD PUT MY ENTIRE CORNER GAS COLLECTION ON MY DS! My dreams had all come true. Here are some shots of the M3 Simply in action…

The Startup Screen
Skinning things I own is like my passion, so my DS was no exception…Zelda Phantom Hourglass
And you gotta love getting games in Japanese before their real release…^^DSLinux
And what computing platform is complete without Linux?

DoomDS
And who can live without a copy of Doom?

Several other apps and emulators can be loaded onto the M3, which I can’t wait to try out, but for now I think I’d better wrap up. It’s getting late, I’m headed for the coast tomorrow at 5:30 in the morning, so hope you enjoyed my article about the super-cool totally awesome M3 DS Simply! Now stop reading this and go out and buy one!

Haha, congrats on (finally) getting your m3. It’s awesome to be able to have all your games with you while only carrying one game-size device. I didn’t even think of getting Phantom Hourglass =O I totally should. Some things you should totally get:
Elite Beat Agents (friggin awesome rhythm game)
ScummVM (allows you to play Monkey Island 1/2)
QuakeDS (self-explanatory, it has network support so you can supposedly play online! =o I haven’t tried this yet, but it sounds promising)
LemmingsDS (because lemmings is awesome)
